      <image:title>RootWork Blog - Let’s Talk Pain Management</image:title>
<image:caption>For hundreds of years’ people have used essential oils, herbs, resins and alternative forms of therapies as natural pain relievers and to heal all forms of trauma, physical and psychological. Modern day researchers have not fully explored these options, but admit that there is evidence that suggests that certain remedies can help, and many people may find them useful. With the opioid crisis being the number one cause of addiction, it is of major importance that we remain mindful of what we are putting in our body through the course of trying to heal from physical injuries or dealing with emotional bullshit that may lead to self-medicating by the way of street drugs. Three common mental health disorders associated with substance abuse are Anxiety, Depression, and Bi-Polar. Opioids are a class of drugs that include heroin, synthetic opioids such as Fentanyl, and pain relievers available legally by subscription such as OxyContin, hydrocodone (Vicodin), codeine, morphine and many others(NIH). The medications are often prescribed when a person is experiencing pain. The problem with these medications is that they are highly addictive and even when prescribed by a medical professional still have adverse side effects. For example, Fentanyl is a powerful synthetic opioid (80 times more potent than morphine) that since 2013 has driven the rise in opioid overdoses! In 2013 and 2014 The National Survey on Drug Use and Health reported that 50.5% of people who misused prescription medication got them from a friend or relative for free, only 22.2% got them from a medical professional. Although those stats are old, imagine the numbers now. The miseducation, misunderstanding, or complete lack of knowledge of the effects that these drugs have on our brain when abused can definitely be the difference between life or death. CRASH COURSE – People that use opioids or other drugs, their tolerance increases (the body adapts to the presence of the abused drug), the person requires more and the need increases over time, rather you want it to or not as physiological changes are happening in the brain. Many are not able sustain their need for the drug either financially or they lose access to the source for the drug which often leads to a downward spiral. When without the drug the body begins to go in withdrawal. The withdrawal period can be very intensive which consequently is what causes one use again to offset the withdrawal. Even withdrawal can be deadly for some. ( This is a conversation for another time!) KEEP IN MIND TOO MUCH OF ANYTHING CAN BECOME PROBLEMATIC!!!! It is often much easier to access Over-the-Counter medicine such as Alieve, acetaminophen, Motrin, which are all effective pain relievers, but anything used over a significant amount of time can either lead to dependence or addiction, and non the less cause adverse side effects. The article to which I obtained this information, will outline 12 different ways to assist with managing pain. The article has included scientific studies that will help those who desire a more clinical approach to healing to better understand the benefits of herbal healing . It is my hope that if you are suffering from any sort of pain or know someone that is, you take a deeper dive into the list that has been provided and incorporate them into your daily routine. 1. Lavender essential oil Inhaling lavender essential oil may help relieve pain and anxiety.Lavender essential oil may help relieve pain naturally. People use lavender oil for pain relief, to help sleep, and to ease anxiety.A small-scale 2012 study found that inhaling lavender oil may relieve pain associated with migraine headaches compared with a placebo. Some research also suggests that lavender oil has pain-relieving, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant effects in animals. 2. Rosemary essential oil Rosemary is another essential oil that may relieve pain. Some researchers state that the rosemary plant, Rosmarinus officinalis L., may help treat headache, muscle and bone pain, and seizures. Rosemary may also reduce inflammation, relax smooth muscles, and boost memory.Dilute essential oils in a carrier oil such as olive oil. Use three to five drops of essential oil for each ounce of carrier oil.The researchers suggest that the herb acts on receptors in the brain called opioid receptors, which are involved with the sensation of pain. A 2013 clinical trial found that rosemary oil reduced pain in people experiencing opiate withdrawal. 3. Peppermint essential oil Peppermint oil comes from the Mentha piperita L. plant. Some research suggests that the peppermint plant has anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and pain-relieving effects. The active compounds in peppermint oil include carvacrol, menthol, and limonene.People often use diluted peppermint essential oil as a topical treatment, meaning that they rub diluted oil into the area that feels achy or painful. One 2015 review notes that people have traditionally used peppermint to relieve painful spasms and problems associated with arthritis. The researchers also report that applying peppermint oil to the temples and forehead may relieve tension headache pain. Avoid putting peppermint oil on broken skin. It can cause allergic reactions, so do a spot test before using peppermint oil on a painful area. Do not use peppermint oil around children. 4. Eucalyptus essential oil The final essential oil on this list of natural ways to relieve pain is eucalyptus oil. This herbal remedy from the Eucalyptus plant may help reduce pain, swelling, and inflammation in the body. One 2013 study found that inhaling eucalyptus oil relieved pain compared with almond oil. Participants inhaled eucalyptus oil for 30 minutes per day for 3 days. They were all recovering from knee replacement surgery.Do not use eucalyptus oil around children or pets. Eucalyptus can trigger asthma. It is important to dilute it in a carrier oil before applying topically. Also, so not diffuse eucalyptus in public. Eucalyptus essential oil is toxic if a person swallows it. Do a spot check to be sure that the skin is not going to react to eucalyptus applied topically. 5. Cloves People have traditionally used cloves, from the Eugenia caryophyllata plant, as a home remedy to relieve pain from toothache.A 2006 study found clove gel to be as effective as benzocaine gel, which is a topical gel that dentists often use to reduce needle pain. The researchers applied clove, benzocaine gel, or a placebo to the inside of the participants’ mouths. They reported lower levels of pain with both clove and benzocaine gels, but not with placebos.More research is needed to see how effectively cloves could relieve other sorts of pain.Researchers also believe that clove can have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antifungal, and antiviral activity. 6. Capsaicin People also use capsaicin, present in chili peppers, for natural pain relief. This substance can cause a mild burning or tingling sensation when a person applies it topically.A 2011 study notes the important role that capsaicin topical creams and patches play in pain management. Many pain-relieving products contain capsaicin.Researchers are not yet sure why it relieves pain, but some believe that it reduces the skin’s sensitivity to pain by working on the nociceptor fibers. These are nerves that carry pain signals. 7. Ginger Eating ginger may accelerate recovery and reduce inflammation after exercise.Ginger, or Zingiber officinale, is a root that shows promise as a natural pain reliever.A 2015 systematic review found that ingesting 2 grams of ginger per day modestly reduced muscle pain from resistance exercise and running when people took it for at least 5 days. The researchers also suggest that ginger may accelerate recovery and reduce inflammation related to exercise.Try including ginger in the diet by adding raw ginger to smoothies or teas. People can also use ginger supplements, which are available in health stores and online. However, the natural, fresh ingredients may be more healthful. Always talk to a doctor before taking any new supplement. Dietary supplements can have side effects and may interact with existing medication. 8. Feverfew Feverfew, also called featherfew or bachelor’s buttons, is a medicinal plant. Traditional uses include treating fever, migraine headaches, rheumatoid arthritis, toothaches, and stomach aches, as well as increasing breast milk.Feverfew contains compounds that may reduce inflammation and muscle spasms. Some researchers believe that the key active compounds include sesquiterpene lactones and flavonoids. The American Migraine Foundation state that there are mixed results about how effective feverfew is, but that it is probably helpful for preventing migraine headaches.A 2011 research review concludes that feverfew flowers and leaves have analgesic, or pain-relieving, properties.Feverfew can cause side effects such as abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, and increased risk of bleeding. So, it is important to talk to a doctor before trying feverfew. 9. Turmeric Curcuma, the active ingredient in the spice turmeric, has pain-relieving qualities.A small-scale 2014 study found that curcuma extract is as effective as ibuprofen for pain management in the treatment of knee osteoarthritis when a person takes it for 4 weeks.Turmeric is also a common herbal remedy for reducing inflammation. To include turmeric in its natural form in the diet, try adding it to curries, smoothies, or juices. 10. Acupuncture Acupuncture is an alternative therapy that advocates believe can help reduce pain. Recent research supports these beliefs. The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) state that acupuncture can help with certain types of pain, including: low back pain neck pain osteoarthritis of knee pain It may also reduce how frequently people get tension headaches and could help prevent migraine headaches. A 2018 meta-analysis found that acupuncture is an effective way to manage chronic pain. The researchers concluded that acupuncture could help with musculoskeletal pain, headache, and pain associated with osteoarthritis.More research into the effects of acupuncture for other pain conditions is now needed, but increasing evidence is suggesting that acupuncture is effective for many types of pain. In fact, acupuncture may help in more than 100 different conditions. 11. Yoga Practicing yoga may help with back and neck pain.Yoga is a physical meditation practice that may offer a way to manage pain naturally. Managing back pain often includes stretching and physical therapy. Yoga provides this.It incorporates breathing exercises, self-care, and relaxation methods, so practicing yoga may also relieve pain related to stress or anxiety. A 2013 study found that yoga may improve low back pain. The NCCIH state that yoga may help relieve low back pain and neck pain, but that there is not enough evidence that it can help for other conditions, such as headache, arthritis, or fibromyalgia. 12. Mindfulness meditation People experiencing chronic pain are increasingly turning to mindfulness meditation as a natural treatment. More research is needed, but initial studies are promising. A 2017 systematic review and meta-analysis looked at 38 studies and eventually concluded that mindfulness meditation can improve pain symptoms, depression, and quality of life. However, the authors say that larger studies are needed to see exactly how effective it is. Source : https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/324572</image:caption>

      <image:title>RootWork Blog - All Gas No Flame</image:title>
<image:caption>"You Know that's just because you are so insecure" Gaslighting is a form of psychological and emotional abuse that causes the victim to question their reality, judgement, self perception, and in most extreme circumstances their sanity. Most Gaslighters distort the truth to manipulate ,confuse and control their victims. What was once only a word ; is now one of the most common forms of abuse affecting many relationships. Gaslighting is a way for someone to deflect responsibility, while making another self conscious, while at the same time actively indulging in some sort of bond. What part of the game is this ? The most recent form of gaslighting requires only mind manipulation, which is the ability to make one doubt their memory or perception especially when recalling events or moments. I can almost be sure that someone has tried to gaslight you at some point in your life, if at no other time, most definitely during the time of dating. Gaslighting can be extremely hard to identify, primarily because it isn't an acute onset, more so a gradual increase over time, similar to finess. In most cases the victim isn't aware of the malicious behavior that is being demonstrated, yet they feel it in every bone in their body, often described as: feeling confused, anxious, depressed yet unable to pinpoint the source of these feelings, but intuitively aware that something is not quite right. Intuitively you know yet you can't seem to trust yourself, which leads to self doubt; a perfect mindset for the person who is doing the gaslighting. Now somehow you're forgetful, imagininging things, or psychologically placing yourself in situations that are out of touch with reality, being told that you are "Crazy or Weird '' just to name a few of the terms used frequently by the gaslighter, as they attempt to make their victim feel as if they are experiencing cognitive lapses, as a way to gain control over one's thoughts that ultimately supports their controlling behaviors. Gaslighters often enjoy deflecting blame, shifting blame, discrediting, trivializing, forgetting, twisting and reframing conversations to deviate from wrongdoing. Who made you this way ? Despite this society wanting to make us think that people are "Born this way" when their behaviors appear to be deviant, this my friend is not the case. Gaslighting is a learned behavior. These genes are not genetically inherited nor are they passed on through blood lines; they are taught just like many other negative behaviors such as abuse and racism. A Gas lighter is a student of their environment and social settings. They observe the behavior of those they are surrounded by , they see the effects of it and when associated with reward they then adopt it and make it a part of their toolbox. The gaslighter may not even know what they are doing or set out to be completely manipulative but the moment that their behavior gets them what they want, it's adapted, repeated and used intentionally. In most cases gaslighters grew up in a home or were around people that exhibit the same behaviors, therefore it is very hard for them to acknowledge their behavior or the toil that is taking on the relationship. The gaslighter has developed a mindset that even they will need help understanding. . Identify who's lighting the Gas! The Gaslighter often undermines their victims emotions and feelings as a way to deny their reality. The Gaslighter continues to invalidate how the other partner feels about the situation, insinuating that their perception is wrong. The Gaslighter often insinuates or convences the victim that they could be imagining or "making up" scenarios that don't exist, when in reality the feelings that the person is experiencing are real. The Gaslighter often undermines the other person to the point they have nowhere left to stand, and word might lead to a disagreement. The Gaslighter is only comfortable talking about their feelings and emotions when and how they want to. The Gaslighter will Never acknowledge their wrong doing or the feelings of the other. The Gaslighter will use phrases like: "Your sound crazy" I was just joking! That never happened You don't remember things clearly There you go again Here we go again Did you catch a flame? Many times victims are left asking and experiencing : Am I good enough ? You begin lying to yourself to avoid put-downs or twist in reality You begin making excuses for his behaviors that even you can't understand. You begin faking happy Find yourself always apologizing or forgiving dysfunctional behavior You often feel confused about the connection Find yourself asking "Am I too sensitive?" Find yourself reasoning with self about the others behavior Although this many seem like straight bullshit to most, victims of gaslighting suffer many long term effects much like any other form of abuse. Overtime victims maladapt to being able to trust themselves this can often lead to: excessive worrying which physically manifests as depression. The victim may become fearful of a relationship which is physically manifest as anxiety. As an attempt to avoid potential gaslighters one may find themselves in Isolation; a defence mechanism to prevent the likelihood of experiencing this type of trauma again. As negative attitudes develop victims may generalize a group of people based on their experience in relationships. Victims may take on their abuse gaslighting patterns and become an abuser. Being a victim of gaslighting can have many psychological effects therefore it is necessary that you recognize the signs and symptoms fast so that you do find yourself caught in the crossfire of a gaslighter. When we know better we do better ESI -</image:caption>

      <image:title>RootWork Blog - Mental Health in the Black Community… How’s yours</image:title>
<image:caption>Just today I read an article in the most recent edition of Web MD,a magazine full of editorials that are written by many different medical professionals. The topic caught my eye as it focused on mental health in the black community. The article highlighted 5 barriers that prevent this demographic from receiving the help that it needs. Below you will find the 5 identified barriers and a brief explanation from my own thoughts of why the barriers exists. 1. Avoiding the label "Crazy" – There is a misunderstanding of what mental health actually is, based on the way that mental health is typically portrayed in the media. The media and entertainment often zooms in on an individual in their Crisis moment, consequently this makes those that suffer from mental illness to suffer in silence due to not wanting to be a visual representation of mental illness. 2. Pray the Problem Away- with African Americans only making up about 14% of the US population, 8 in 10 blacks identify as Christian, which has a major influence over mental health. Many blacks that identify with religion are very reluctant to participate in mental health services, and would rather rely on the Bible's recollections of miracles and faith as not only a preventative measure but use prayer alone as a way to overcome mental illness. I’m most cases this is not adequate treatment. 3. Mistrust of the system- Many times blacks are reluctant to turn to mental health services because the majority of business that over serviced are grass root programs typically funded by the government. Historically, when the government is involved much is to be reported, which has the ability to lead to the exploitation of the vulnerable and disenfranchised individuals as it is related to mandated reporting. Blacks are less likely to accept government programing as a sense of healing. The question that most blacks ponder is ,“How can the oppressor heal the oppressed? '' Let's not mention the numerous experiments that have been done on black people in the name of healing . The level of trust has been dissipated to say the least 4. Lack of Clinicians of Color-Ensuring access to care is critical, however good luck with finding a Black therapist. Only 4% of social workers are black and only 2% of Psychiatrist are black. Distrust often trumps trust, which plays a significant role when it comes to regurgitating trauma to a non black mental health professional. Not too many are going to be comfortable dispelling their life , recalling past traumas, and life regrets with a person that doesn’t share the same skin color as them or that can not relate to the ongoing struggle of the black person in America. Black men face another barrier which is the lack of black male presence in mental health, therefore making it more difficult to seek a counselor that they are comfortable with and can relate their struggles. 5. Teens and Therapy - Mental health doesn’t only affect the older population but the younger population as well.In the last past decade suicide rates continue to be lower amongst black children compared to their white counterparts, therefore it may seem as if our youth are not at risk, however that is the furthest things from the truth. The younger population appears to be more open minded when it comes to mental Health and counseling services ;more than their elders; this could have everything to do with an increased academia amongst this cohort. Nevertheless, the “Don’t tell what is going on in this house”mentality that is still applied and serves as a barrier to care for those who are really needing their mental health addressed. Many preconceived notions by the parents of these children assist in perpetuating the many stigmas of mental health. After reading much of this dialogue and coming up with my own theories of why theses barriers exist in the black community, the only thing left to do is to think about how we remove the barriers so that we can continue to heal and stopped being forced to walk through life without being able to address the mental health concerns that play a major role in our daily lives. Individuals, families, and communities should take a look at these five barriers to mental health and discuss them. We have to ask ourselves if the boundaries that we had to put up to protect us are actually holding us back. We have to acknowledge the work we do and make sure that we are creating services with our people in mind so that we can make sure we are cultivating a workforce that is aimed at the upward mobility of our people and not just our pocket. We can all start by asking ourselves : What are my feelings about mental health ? Am I creating a barrier to my mental health, if so why? How will the degree I get better serve my people? How does my professional expertise better help me assist my people? How do I feel at these barriers? Are these barriers vadild, if so why? What doI need from my community to better manage my mental health? <image:title>RootWork Blog - A Test of Faith</image:title>
<image:caption>Imani - Faith- To believe with all our heart in our people, our parents, our teachers, our leaders and the righteousness and victory of our struggles. The symbol of Imani contains both the Ankh and the Djed, which symbolizes life, stability, and steadfastness. Faith speaks to our complete trust and confidence in someone or something. Imani speaks to our ability to have faith in one another as well as faith in our struggle. It has been said without unity we can not begin the work that needs to be done to elevate ourselves and without faith, our ability to sustain any work that we have done will lessen if not diminish if we do not have faith in ourselves and our brothers and sisters. It was this day, January 1,1804, that Haiti made history by being the first Black republic in the world and the first country in the Western hemisphesere to abolish slavery. This act alone dissipated the world's understanding of liberty and freedom. Never did France, Britain, or Spain plan to take a loss by the hands of enslaved Hatians. Never did anyone expect enslaved peoples to understand their depths of freedom. Not only did they physically fight but they made it their duty to intellectually educate themselves. The slaves of Haiti banded together to not only understand their human rights but the biblical principles that held them in disporportiant positions. The Haitian revolution was the only successful revolt in the documented history of humanity. This was a complete act of courage and heroism. This revolt was instrumental in ending the slave trade, and also inspired countless other acts fights for freedoms around the world. For this reason the day is recognized in Haiti as their Independence Day and is recognized as Ancestor Day, which pays homage to the ancestors that fought to ensure a free Haiti. Our ancestors executed the principal of Imani. They learned to have faith in themselves and their community and because of the faith they had and their commitment to their struggle they were victorious. Some would say that the history of Haiti now came at the price of their freedom. I would say, perhaps they have lost faith in themselves and their community. As the saying goes, to whom much is given, much is required, which would imply that we have to keep the same heroism energy even after winning out battles. We have to learn to stick together in all situations, not just situations brought on by our oppressor. We have to work together here and everywhere. We have to understand that our brother’s and sister's problems are our problems too. Faith is also grounded in our spirituality. Spirituality starts with the belief of the divine. From Egypt on we are taught that we are created in the image of the divine, because of this we have unlimited consciousness and creativity through self determination and positive personality. We are expected to carry ourselves like the divine therefore we are not only responsible for ourselves but for each other and the societies that we create. As Kwanzza comes to an end, we must take the time to ensure that we are living in alignment with the African principles that better help to align us with our divine purpose. As you set intentions, set them with purpose.</image:caption>

      <image:title>RootWork Blog - I Create</image:title>
<image:caption>Kummba – creativity- To do always as much as we can, in the way that we can, in order to leave our community more beautiful and beneficial that we inherited it. This principle calls us to tap into our creativity, empowers us to activate our self-determination that aids us in exploring or inherited greatness. When I think about Kummba, I think of the many places all over the world where we can go to see the creativity that lives within us. If we travel back to the motherland, the country of Egypt, we will encounter various monuments that depict the fact that Black Magic is real. Egypt is the land that helps to remind us of the powers that we possess. Our creativity is captured in the well-preserved Kings and Queens that use to govern the land to the hieroglyphics that cover pillars and walls that recall our stories that account for our universal consciousness. Anyone can visit and know that we were there, this was our home. Egypt captured both spiritual and ethical commitment and made it their obligation to leave a legacy of the ancestors for generations to come. Let’s walk through Atlanta, Georgia, the home of Black Enterprise. I had the chance to visit there a few times this last summer. The Little Five-Points was one of my favorite places. The Little Five Points just miles away from FOUR historically black Universities: Spellman, Morehouse, Clark- Atlanta and still standing but not occupied Morris Brown University. The Little-Five points within walking distance of the Martian Luther Museum and the historic home that he grew up in. Little Five-Points minutes away from the famous Oakland Cemetery. In the Five -Points there were countless black markets filled with african inspired oils, arts, and knowledge. People lined the street unapologetically embracing their talents, performing their arts, and displaying their ability to be culturally activated. The buildings were covered with Black murals by many black artists. The streets were lined with museums and educational pit stops that serve as time portals that allowed me to recall history and remind me of the struggle that my ancestors went through just so that I have the freedoms that I have today. Just being in Atlanta to see and feel the energy of black success taught me that one of the greatest freedoms one can experience today as a black person Is to remember. It is important that we clarify the misconception of creativity. Creativity doesn’t have to be art, dance, singing, poetry or a bestselling novel. Creativity can be manifested as black enterprise through the means of black businesses. Businesses that require creative thinking that can assist in solving everyday problems. As we continue to develop black businesses, we also leave a cultural engineered blueprint for continued success. Creativity can be manifest through strong and healthy families and relationships. The more that we move with purpose the more that we cultivate relationships that create families that can learn to step away from narrative that longer fit us and build off of the core Kwanzaa principles that will set the tone for our offspring for generations to come. Many underestimate the power of visualization. Our ability to visualize is our ability to teleport ourselves to places that we have never been and may never have the chance of going. Our power to visualize allows us to experience events without physically being present. Our power to visualize allows us to learn from the past so that can gain the information that was lost, clarify the misconceptions that have left us plague and stagnate and allows us to rewrite our truths and add to our never ending legacy all around the world so that no matter where we go we can always see ourselves. By visualizing we activate our creativity and leave our families and communities better than they were before. Ask Your Slef : What does creativity mean to you and why is it important ? When was the last time you felt creative? What is a creative community?</image:caption>

<image:title>RootWork Blog - Setting My Intentions on Purpose</image:title>
<image:caption>Nia – Purpose – a commitment to the collective vocation of building and developing and defending our community, its culture and history in order to regain our historical initiative and greatness as a people. The foundation of this principle encourages us to look within ourselves and set personal goals that are beneficial to the community. The word Purpose is an adverb, defined as: to do something with intention. When we consider the reasons why we do things or why we have things we can usually find the intention. For example, to have money can mean many things. To have money means you can buy food, you can purchase the fancy handbags that are trending, dine at some of your favorite restaurants, even splurge on new cars and it means you can pay your bills. Sure, these things account for us being able to ensure our basic needs are met and, to some degree, may make you feel as if you are living your best life, but money without purpose is simply money spent. For years we have been told that money brings about happiness, money solves all our problems, but if you are like me you have grown enough to know that money only solves the problems that require money. This type of growth allows us to gain a better perspective about the word purpose and begin applying that approach to every aspect of our life, the more that we grow we discover that the more we do with purpose makes a lot more sense. Finding purpose in our lives brings about direction. Taking the time to think about why we do the things we do can make our lives more meaningful. Imagine using your financial power to help build up your community. Imagine your money helping to build schools that teach Black history all year long, neighborhood community centers that house culturally appropriate services, hospitals that are headed by Black healthcare professionals, and Black owned banks that specialize in underwriting loans for the development of Black business. These are just a few ways to spend your money with intention. The principal of Nia suggests that it is up to us to think about what matters the most in our communities. It is no one else’s responsibility to build up our communities but ourselves. We must make it our obligation to take a deeper look into the way that we spend our money. By moving with purpose not only to make money to provide for our families, but spend on things that matter the most. We need to invest in our communities in order to create a vision of greatness and success for our children and generations to come. When thinking about purpose ask yourself: Where do you see your future? Where do you see your community in the next 3 years ? When you describe your community to your grandchildren how would you want to describe it? What is my purpose and how will it benefit my life now and years to come ?</image:caption>

      <image:title>RootWork Blog - The Buy in Matters</image:title>
<image:caption>Ujamma – Cooperative Economics- To build and maintain our own stores, shops, and other businesses, and to profit from them together. In Swahili the word “Ujamma” means extended family and brotherhood; it asserts that a person becomes a person through the people or the community. The spirit of others or communities bring about family units that foster cohesion, love and service. The practice of shared wealth and the work necessary to achieve it is the core foundation of Ujamma. Taking time to reflect on the Willie Lynch Letter helps to put Ujamma in more perspective. This speech was said to have been delivered by Willie Lynch on the bank of the James River in the colony of Virginia in 1712. Lynch was a British slave owner in the West Indies, it was in the colony that he was summoned to teach his methods on how to make a slave to the various slave owners that seemed to be struggling with sustaining their product which equated to bad economics. During the greeting of his speech Lynch stated that his method of controlling slaves would guarantee the control of salves for 300 hundred years. Willie Lynch, stated “It was necessary that your slaves depend on us, they must respect and trust us only, for distrust is bigger than trust.” Lynch told the slave owners that it was most important that their wives and children to use his methodologies intensively for one year and in return the slaves would remain perpetually distrustful; this would be the framework to begin to make a slave. I chose to outline the Willie Lynch Speech because it is most important for us as Africans in American to understand the amount of buy-in that occurred to put us at a disadvantage today. The amount of teamwork that went into the manipulation of the black mind was unprecedented. Many slave owners, families and communities bought into this slave ideology and made sure to pass it on from generation to generation which consequently paved the way to generational wealth and a heightened white economy. One of many favorite sayings is “When we know better, we do better”. Knowing this little bit of information makes it even more important to understand the meaning of the “Buy In” and the amount of discipline it takes. We must exert the same amount of energy of those that bought into the disenfranchisement of African Americans to develop a more rich black economy. When we think about our college studies, careers, business establishments we must not just think of the money that it will make us, but we must think of how it will benefit our people. As an African American Gerontologist, it was important for me to think about how I would offer services to my people first. As a Cosmetologist I had to think about how I would reach my people first, and as an upcoming Licensed Masters Addiction Counselor, I must think about how my services will benefit my people first. The measurement of a nation is based on its upward mobility as a collective not as individual, therefore if I want my people to be better, I must create opportunities for them to do so, after all ,I am my brother’s keeper. When we create services and business for our people, we strengthen the black economy. When we create jobs for our people, we build trust and positive relationships. When we purchase from our people and build in our communities, we develop stronger environments conducive for our overall well being. Ujamma teaches us the importance of building and strengthening our own economy by working together. Just as they studied us, we must apply the same principals to our business practices today. We must learn how to TRUST again so that we can begin building enterprises and community networks that engage in cooperative economics for the common good of the community. Ujamma also highlights the importance of generosity especially as it relates to the poor and vulnerable. It is my opinion that you don’t always have to give by the way of a tangible necessity. Far too often are services or goods given without a buy in to whom which you are giving. At times this leads right back to distrust. If you are a business, use a giving opportunity to highlight your services, serve as a teaching moment or require some sort of pay forward in return for your grace. This is where having your neighbor’s business card can come in handy, in return making you an avenue for someone else’s service and helps express the concepts of shared social wealth. Ask yourself: A I’m working collectively? Have I made connections with others outside of the comfort of my circle? Am I operating in the gaps? Does my business or efforts meet the needs of my people and if now how can I expand my reach? When was the last time I worked as a team or participated in a team building activity in my community?</image:caption>

      <image:title>RootWork Blog - Am I My Brother’s Keeper ?</image:title>
<image:caption>UJima – Collective Work and responsibility- To build and maintain our communities together and make our brothers’ and sisters’ problems our problems and solve them together. Ujima reminds me of the saying “To whom much is given, much is required.” This helps us understand that we as a collective are responsible for our achievements and our setbacks. When I think of collective work I immediately think of the UnderGround. The Underground, if you haven’t already watched it you should! It is a HULU series, that recalls the many atrocities that Africans brought to America faced as they fought their way north to be free. Of course, the infamous Harriet Tubman was the highlight of the film but what stuck out to me the most was the endurance of the runaways and how the teamwork it took to gain their freedom. It was definitely not a one-man job. There was a point in the show that the slaves made it to freedom, but knew it wasn’t enough for them to be free, they knew they had to go back and escort more slaves to freedom. The already freed runaways felt as if it was their obligation to their people to go back and free them despite their many encounters with death they had already faced. I chose the word obligation to explain their efforts because at what point do we hold ourselves accountable for our brothers and sisters? Ujima also brings to mind a more personal experience. Ninth street in Wichita, Kansas. If you are familiar with the area that I am talking about then you already know that in the early 90s it was a Hell of a place to be. Ninth street was known as the infamous “Crack Alley.” There was never a right time to walk down a street free from old syringes, used condoms, and noticeable drug addicts looking for their next trip. Nevertheless, that was the place that we called home. There was a lot of history on Ninth street, primarily because it was the home of a few generations but my family decided one day it would be the last generation that grew up in what they would describe as dyfunction. My Aunt, who had struggled with drug addiction herself, decided it would be a great idea to help others work towards sobriety. She wanted them to have what she had, which was a supportive family, and a positive environment so that they too could improve their quality of life. With the help of her husband, brother-in- law, and sister, A drug program expanded into a Sober living Home for women with children, a Day program for youth that offered after school programing and tutoring services, a summer youth program so that teenagers had a way to earn a positive income, a drill team that brought all of the children in the community together to participate in drug free youth activities and spread the word to "Just Say No" through drill and step to other children in the city , a dance hall for youth to keep them out of the street on the weekends, a meeting hall so that people in search of safe place free of drugs an alcohol could gather for the holidays (Put Down The Pipe) and a Summer Bash thata envied the entire community out to enjoy fun, music , entertainment and laughter in a sober environment to end summer on a positive note ! As you can tell sober was the BuzzWord; primarily because through a careful assessments ;drugs and alcohol had been identified to be the root cause of many of the problems that was plaguing the community and its people. My Aunt had a vision, but she needed the buy in from the community and her family as well. Together as a team they tackled not only a drug problem that had affected my family and my block, but a problem that seemed to had affected every home in the community. As the word spread about the work they were doing on 9th street , more people flooded in wanting to be a part of the collective effort to build more safer communities for the people and drug free environments for the children. This is a clear example of Ujima; making our brothers’ and sisters’ problems our problems and solving them together. The measurement of a nation’s growth is never determined by individual success, it is measured by the growth of the collective. Ujima teaches us that individually we can work to solve problems but unless we learn to work together, we will always be in the same boat. There is no such thing as a silo in group work. It took us working together to persevere through the most heinous act known to man, therefore it will take us working together to build the resilience to preserver onward. Like Neo said “ I’m a movement by myself, but we are a force when we're together… You make me better.” Ask yourself : When is the last time I help out a friend or stranger? Do my efforts extend outside of myself and my own needs? Am I solving a problem that may be the answer to someone’s problem? Do I have a story of triumph to share that may benefit another? Am I my brother’s keeper?</image:caption>

      <image:title>RootWork Blog - Who am I ?</image:title>
<image:caption>Kujichagulia – Self Determination To define ourselves, name ourselves, create for ourselves and speak for ourselves. The second principal of Kwanzaa is Kujichagulia. It has been encouraged for years that we as African people define, cultivate, and reintroduce ourselves instead of allowing others to do so. This type of self determination requires us to go back, and get all of our lost memories so that we can reshape our world in our own image. By recovering our history we can tell our own stories, create our own traditions, and speak our cultural truth as we continue to influence and contribute to world history. "Who am I?" is a statement that most African Americans have made at some point during their lifespan. Through watching films and reading books we can recall several accounts where our ancestors were brutally beaten for refusing to be called by the name of our slave masters. Today, many of us still carry on slave names as we continue to pass, for many of us these names have become a legacy and for others, just another way to remember that we were once property of a white man, thus making us his legacy. Just this year, right at the beginning of the Pandemic, my oldest sister, Tamara, granted me the opportunity to travel with her to the Motherland. This of course was the opportunity of a lifetime. We traveled to Accra, Ghana. A few months prior, my mother had completed a genealogy test and our results concluded that a nice percentage of our DNA traced back there to include a few other places like Benin and Togo. The flight there was epic, courtesy of Delta SkyMiles. Upon our arrival we were welcomed with the warm salutation "AKWABA", which means welcome home. The moment I stepped off the plane I felt at home. The warm moist breeze, the deep dark chocolate faces with the unforgettable smiles brought about a feeling of enchantment. Just being there, I was able to dispel many myths associated with Africa. The story that has been painted for African in America is a complete dis justice aimed to be a deterrence to persuade us from returning home. While in Ghana, we were served with nothing but the freshest juice. Pineapple, coconut, orange juice, you name it; It was freshly squeezed each morning. The food was beautiful at sight. Shops lined along the streets were filled with products and goods for as long as our eyes could see. Grocery shopping was redefined to say the least. Fresh vegetables, and fruits were placed out on tabletops and fresh herbs and spices were hung from tents. It was a whole vibe. Healthy was under statement. On down was the Makola Market that our Ghanaian brother and sister, Adjowa and Earl escorted us to. There was more food, fruit, vegetables, art, stones, and all other hand-crafted items for purchase. Since returning from Africa, I have purchased a juicer and I now now drink nothing but fresh juice! I went live a few times and shared my experiences and now I see many of my people juicing and rewriting narratives. While there, brother Earl asked me what day I was born on and I replied to him that I was born on a Sunday! Earl told me that My name was ESI. In Ghana, girls born on a Sunday are given the name Esi. This was amazing to me! My father named me Catherine, that was also his sister’s name. I have always loved that name. I was overwhelmed with joy to be told my African name I would have been given. Lucky for me, I was informed that I could add ESI anywhere in my name. Since then I have renamed myself and I now go by Catherine Esi LaShay. It was a complete honor to return from African and reintroduce myself to America with my God Given right to know my name! Since then I have looked up my children’s names and allowed them to incorporate their name with the name I gave them. I can only hope that they receive and incorporate their African name with the same pride and honor that I did. To add on… I met a girl I worked with whose name was Adjowa ! while in Africa I found out that her name meant that she was born on a Monday, just like my sister. She isn’t called this name at work because people don’t care to pronounce it, so she goes by another name, but Adjowa is still spelled out to the side. When I returned to work I emailed her on purpose, but this time I said Hello, sister born on a Monday !! She was so excited that I knew that. I told her my name was ESI and she immediately told me that I was born on a Sunday. Through our names we found out that we were from the same area in Africa Benin and Togo. Adjowa has been here for a little over 7 years and returns home only when she can. Her and I are great friends now. Who am I ,the question that was answered for me through my pilgrimage to Africa? Since that pilgrimage I have continued my journey of self determination and added yet another name that helps to define my spiritual journey . My name is now Esi Lashay Awronke -(A person Ifa see’s to take care of) I learned so much and all that I learned I brought back with me to share. Kujichagulia teaches us to rename ourselves, create the world to which we want others to see us in, and then reintroduce ourselves! Today you are being encouraged to find your self-determination and step into your light. Follow your light and walk in your truth for others to see. Being Authentically you with pride like never before. Teach your children so they can teach their children the meaning of being self- determined. Ask yourself these questions: "Who am I?" "What do I represent?" "What is culturally rooted and foreign?" Are you ready to take more control of your life and for the good of the community? Remember – “Until the lion tells the story, the Hunter will always be the hero.” African proverb Need an aid in the process toward self-reliance? <image:title>RootWork Blog - Umoja- moving in unity</image:title>
<image:caption>Umoja ( oo-MO-jah) To Strive for and maintain unity in the family, community, nation , and race. Unity is commonly defined as the state of being united or joined as a whole. I think in order to understand this concept it is important that we acknowledge that our existence would not be, if it wasn’t for a conjoining of energies, which helps dispel the concept of “Self-Made in its entirety. Unity starts in the family. A family that is united is a family that is strong. Pre- Trans Atlantic Slave trade, long before we were stolen we believed in family. Families didn’t just consist of the Nuclear family, which includes father, Mother and children, however the family consisted of many more such as : grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins to include the oldest of old elders and our ancestors. This concept allowed for the family to operate as a unit. In the unit there were many roles and the family members filled them. For example, the elders served as teachers, caregivers and childcare providers. IT was not uncommon to see a grandmother cooking for the whole family so the parents could work, or the mother could care for her children. No role was bigger or lesser than the next. These roles were important for the purpose of maintaining culture and traditions. It wasn’t uncommon to see many family units residing together, working together, and building together. The purpose of family was very strong in these times because there was no outside influence that would detour one from the norms and customs we lived by. Just thinking about this, it's not hard for me to imagine being married young, having kids but also having the support of your entire family. The establishment of unity in the family paves the way for unity in the community. A Community is defined as a group of people living in the same place or having a characteristic in common; the people in the community typically share common attitudes, interests and goals. The concept of unity may be difficult to understand if one was not privileged in the family prior to being a young adult entering the community. This is where the concept “it takes a Village to Raise a Child” comes from. As mentioned above the family unit consisted of the nuclear family and extended family; the community includes friends, neighbors, and anyone who resides within proximity, sharing the same attitudes, interest, and goals. Unity in a community helps to promote a sense of togetherness. Unity in the community reflects us collectively working together to achieve outcomes that directly effect or impact our community. The family and the Community help to build a healthy nation. A nation is defined as a sovereign state to whose citizens are relatively alike in factors such as language, or common descent. This implies that it Is possible to build a nation when we start in our very homes building unity in our families and communities. The nation does its job to hold the families and the community members accountable to this very principal. Race plays its role because race refers to a specific group of people. Being black growing up in America contradicts the concept of unity, primarily because this was the very thing that the slave masters disapproved of. They knew that a people that lacked unity was a people that could be divided. Moving forward we have the ability to rewrite what has been written for us and return to concepts that better serve us individually and as a collective. On this day of Kwanzaa.. You are being asked to discuss what unity means to your family, your community, nation and race. Ask yourself why unity is important, and then set your intentions of how you plan to move toward a more unified family, community, nation and race. In this discussion make sure to discuss any barriers there might interfere with the unity you are setting your intention towards. Address those concerns and create a plan that will allow you to move forward with confidence and discipline .</image:caption>

      <image:title>RootWork Blog - Winter Solstice Energy</image:title>
<image:caption>This weeks Action Tomorrow, December 21, 2020 marks a very pivotal point in history. Not only is it the first day of the Winter Solstice; the last season change of the year, a time when the Sun is at its lowest point in the Northern Hemisphere, but a time when the day is most short and the night is longer than it’s ever been all year long. The winter solstice teaches us that for anything to begin, death has to occur; therefore, after the darkest day of the year, the sun will rise and increase its light that will bring about renewal and rebirth. Many Ancient Egyptians and other Indigenous peoples believed that when the sun reached the lowest point of the years before rising again to prepare for the summer months, this process took three full days. When the Sun rose again on December 25th it was considered (The Birth of the Sun) If this is beginning to sound very familiar? You’re on the right track! In Ancient Egypt the Sun was considered the Savior. During the festivities people would make solar observations that would help them set their intentions regarding plating, harvesting, spiritual incubations periods, and universal consciousness as it relates to the spiritual alignment of the soul. The winter was and still is celebrated for days. The celebration usually lasts for two weeks including cultural festivities, eating, dancing, parading, bearing gifts and paying homage to the Sun for its gift of light. It wasn’t until the Romans took these stories and created figures who later became Jesus Christ and integrated him into their version of the Winter Solstice which is now Christmas! With conqeour comes rebirth of even stories that are now passed down year after year with limited truth. It is important to know the origin, the Roots of which things as simple as the holiday that we celebrate come from. It is only then that we learn to celebrate with more meaning and purpose. This year’s Winter Solstice will share the date with one of the greatest planet conjunctions; Jupiter and Saturn. This conjunction only occurs somewhere between every 400 to 800 years. Look up in the sky on December 21st about 45 minutes after the sun sets, it will be the highest brightest star in the sky. It’s my assumption this may have been the same star that was seen in Bethlehem at the time of the birth of the Sun/ JesusChrist. Is this a coincidence or what? Anyway, Jupiter, the planet that governs over economics, religion and politics, merges with Saturn, the planet that the rules business matters and law and order will come together. This may seem like nothing to some, but the systems these planets rule influence just about every aspect of our life. According to the Daily Planet Guide, these conjunctions are game changers!! The last time these conjunctions occurred they foreshadowed : the Kennedy assignation, Vietnam War, 9/11, Afghan war and many of the social, economic, and political aftermath that followed. As if this year couldn’t get any worse, this conjunction may bring about turning points or usher in a host of changes as it relates to revolutionary moments, global finances, climate changes and emphasis on energy. 2020 has most defiantly gotten our attention but 2021 will show us all the changes that were being made while we were focused on what was in the headlines. We can thank rebel Aquarius for changes to come. As we continue to move through this energy, it will be important to take the time and ask yourself what things about yourself can allow to die because they no longer serve you. Just like the moon brings death to the sun every day, we must bring death to parts of ourselves we have either outgrown or no longer serve our higher calling ! Death is a part of transformation, as we evolve, just like trees, we have to allow ourselves to go dormant so that when we emerge we are much greater, more stronger than before. Be the Sun!!!!!! Get more Sun !!!</image:caption>

      <image:title>RootWork Blog - Why Are Y’all Commodifying Sage…and other shit?</image:title>
<image:caption>As we move towards an more spiritually competent society, a time where it is finally cool and the norm to be completely unconventional in one's thinking and spiritual practices, a time where everyone proclaims to be a healer or sell some sort of healing product, we must learn to continue to seek knowledge ourselves, only then will we be one with our experience. As the world continues to wake up and become more with nature, what seems to be a wonderful thing, also has its ugly. Natural tools used in most Native and spiritual practices are becoming more of a demand as it relates to its commercial use and current trends. The Native Americans groups, herbalist, and conservationist have mentioned their concerns about the unethical, overproduction, illegal harvesting, and commercial use for such sacred plants and medicine. In all other words there are many large companies that are commodifying spirituality for monetary gain. This is a type of culture appropriation in many ways. Just this week, I visited the local Walmart, and lord and behold, they were selling Sage Kits, Palo Santo wood, incense and Native inspired spiritual items. A part of me became immediately unraveled and extremely upset. In my mind I was thinking “Why in the world would Walmart want to sell spiritual items?” It also bothered me to know who in their right mind would purchase such items from Walmart? Spirituality does not usually come with instruction or a how to do pamphlet, therefore it would be ludicrous to think you can just pick something up and use it without any basic understanding or guidance. We all tend to love celebrities when it comes to their styles and way of life. We often romanticize their personal practices and social behaviors. However, celebrity influence can become very problematic when we begin, we begin taking on behaviors and practices that we have absolutely no idea about nor do we take the time to learn about. Dating back to the time of the famous Nipsey Hussle’s passing, I can remember Lauren London, mentioning Nispey’s spiritual rituals and the use of sage. Since Lauren’s public recall, sage sales amongst the African American and pop culture has increased by a large margin. I’m in no way saying that it’s a bad thing, but when you ask most of the newest population of sage users why they use sage, they lack the knowledge and the understanding of the spiritual practice they are partaking in. I am liking this to taking another person’s prescribed medications because you feel as if you have the same symptoms, failing to consult a physician yourself. I am in no way trying to steer you away from your spiritual ascension more than I am encouraging you to grow in your spirituality by taking the time to educate yourself while on your journey. Knowing what you are doing and why is the most crucial part of your spiritual journey because the last thing you want to do is to use your mediums incorrectly and not get the outcome you were looking for, sometimes even getting adverse effects. This is an easy way to turn yourself away from spiritual practices or to believe that your spiritual journey is being dampened. Also, these plants and medicines are gifts from our ancestors thus they are not meant to be taken and used in abundance because you “have to have them”. Gaining knowledge about these items and their properties and their importance is what is going to keep them on our land so we can continue to use them on our journey. Root worker Notes: It is important that you familiarize yourself with an abundance of herbs and medicinal plants that can be used as burnable much like sage. Root workers used what was convenient to them, what was in proximity; mainly because they were healing the sick. One would not rely on a plant that they could not gain access to by any means, this would be a barrier to one’s healing and their practice. There are many other great plants and resins that can be used in lieu of sage, which is why it is important to do your research</image:caption>

<image:title>Meet Our Founders - Meet Alyrique Senior Editor, Youth Light Worker</image:title>
<image:caption>Hi everyone! I’m Alyrique Franklin and I am currently an upcoming senior at WSU. I am working towards my degree in psychology along with a certification in community psychology. I am hoping that I will be able to work towards another certification in human factors and a minor in linguistics before I graduate next fall! RootWork to me is about decolonizing my narrative and the way I move in life. Although I am only 20, I’ve been able to recognize that a lot of what is present today was not made to benefit me or people that look or think like me. I think that what RootWork provides is history and an avenue for reconnecting people like myself through spirituality and it affirms that we exist and we always have!</image:caption>
